Should I Change my Job When it’s Hard to Take a Managing Role?

Author:广东艾德尔人力资源有限公司  Pubdate:2017-10-16  Click:503
Napoleon once said, Every French soldier carries a marshal's baton in his knapsack.

However, some excellent employees who dream of being a leader can’t find their batons. They are dragged in a dilemma.

Self-growth is a lasting topic in career development.

From junior employees to professional seniors, people are always looking for a new opportunity --- leading a team. That requires outstanding abilities in management and communication, but such opportunities are usually hard to find. If you are faced with such dilemma, what can you do?

Today, with easily accessible recruitment information on the Internet, few people are willing to stick to a job which is not suitable for their development. People may think, “now that in this company I can’t have opportunities to train my management ability, why not try working in another company?”
But that follows a question, is it possible for a candidate who never led a team to change his job as a leader or a manager?

The reality may disappoint you. Employers always prefer those are experienced in management.

But that doesn’t mean the possibility of being a leader is totally excluded. Follow the next three steps and you may find your own solutions.

01
Dig out your potential in your past experiences

In your career path, nothing is more important than consistent self-growing, except, you know, earning more money. If you think management ability is of essential importance for your future development but you can’t find proper chances to train yourself in your company, then to look for new opportunities outside becomes more necessary.

Even though you don’t have much experience in management, you can show your potential management ability from your previous work experiences which HR is of course willing to see especially if you apply for a management position.

Consultants at BRecruit recommend you to reevaluate your career from the following two aspects:
  • Whether you have had the experience in training new employees.
  • Whether you have had the experience in trans-department communication, coordination or task allocation.

If your answer is yes, that can be your shining point when applying for manager positions because you’ve already involved in management work.

If your answer is no, then please read the following part.

02
Grab the chance for you to try managing roles

Rome cannot be built in one day, and your career goal may not be achieved through one-time job changing. If you wish to develop your management ability , is the title or salary so necessary? What you need concern is whether this new job can offer you chances to train your management ability. The importance of title and salary here is weakened.

Now that HR says clearly it’s hard to find a management position for you, you can try first some non-management jobs where you are allowed to lead some small teams or projects.

Present an example.

A candidate was a senior engineer who developed driving assistant function in automotive industry. He was good in skills but lack of management experience. He had strong motivation to develop his management ability, but still failed to find proper opportunities in company. So he looked for new jobs outside. That’s not easy as we discussed before, until he contacted our consultants.

The BRecruit consultant suggested him directly that he can take managing roles but he needed to clearly express his strong determination to developing management ability in the interview, rather than pursue higher position or salary in a short time. The candidate agreed.

Based on a thorough understanding of the whole industry, the consultant recommended him a position of senior engineer. Though same in level, this position required candidates to lead a small team to develop a new product.

The candidate successfully took the offer and performed strongly. Soon he’s promoted as director ang his salary was increased.

Thus, when you are not qualified in some rigid requirements, why not change another way of thinking? Sometimes step back and you will find a wider place with more possibility.

03
Get out of your comfort zone and try new challenges

From a general aspect, it’s a dangerous signal if an excellent employee who are willing to take management responsibility failed to find good chances inside the company:
Is the company/industry you have worked in declining?

We have suggested you a way to switch jobs to another company in the previous part, but what can we do if the whole industry is not booming as before?

As long as your industry is not going to perish, you can definitely find a promising field related to your previous work. What you need is to enter a new field which is close to your expertise and you are interested in.

Let us see another example.

The candidate had worked in a telecom company for many years and his main responsibility was signal testing. Now he’s a little anxious for he hadn’t learned anything new in those years.

BRecruit consultant suggested him to try in automotive industry. Maybe he couldn’t do management work at beginning, but there’re plenty of opportunities in the industry. Though with some concerns, the candidate accepted consultant’s suggestion and worked in an automotive company.

Within one year, the candidate was promoted from tester to team leader and the salary was increased accordingly. In the latest conversation, he told the consultant “Now more recruitment consultants contacted me; the jobs they provided are all in management level which I dreamed before and the pay is much higher…”

People always say it’s not easy to walk in a single-plank bridge. Why, then, don’t we choose another way to go?

Conclusion

As one of the important work skills, management ability is definitely worth pursuing. If you think that’s what you need, be brave and try to get it. At that time, strategy is much important.

Don’t dream to accomplish your goal at one stroke; look further and focus on if one opportunity is good enough. The key is how to distinguish good and proper one for yourself. If you are confused, welcome to contact BRecruit consultants!
